The next decade will see the emergence of connected technologies that will transform our daily lives and make us smarter。These include fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities and smart factories powered by Devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)。But to realize the full potential of these technologies, we still need to overcome some technical issues -- mainly delays。

Latency is the slow speed of transmission, which can occur when data has to travel long distances through multiple network switches and routers。Although each delay may be only a few milliseconds, it can add up to a significant performance degradation that cannot support the development of emerging technologies。The solution to reduce latency lies in edge data centers, which bring IT resources closer to the users and devices they serve, improving application performance and reliability through localized computing, data storage, and data analysis。

  • Infrastructure management - Since many edge data centers are unattended or restricted access sites,Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) tools will also benefit edge data center owners and operators,Simon's MapIT G2, for example, works with EagleEye Connect,Copper cable and optical fiber connections can be managed and monitored remotely。

  • Smart PDUs -- All edge data centers require distribution units (PDUs) to distribute power for active devices。Simon's PowerMax Smart PDUs provide receptacle-level power monitoring and on-off control for active devices, in addition to sensors for rack-level environmental monitoring (i.e., temperature, humidity) -- all of which can be remotely enabled from a centralized cloud location via an intuitive web interface。

  • Cable Management - Simon's cable management solutions are critical to securing, routing and managing cables in cabinets in any edge data center。

  • Cooling management - Edge data centers will need cooling management solutions, such as Simon's empty panels and protective brushes and channel closure solutions to keep hot and cold air separate。
